Product Comparison: Sun Protection
As this product comparison shows, paying attention to differences pays off. It applies to both product groups: for sunscreen products certified as natural and organic cosmetic products and for conventional sunscreens with chemical sun protection.
Enjoying the sun without regret – who would not want that? But for skin, the sun can be both friend and foe. Enjoyed correctly and in moderation, it stimulates the body and soul. Excessive time in the sun is paid for mercilessly: skin ages prematurely, and, in the worst cases, skin cancer can be the price paid for seeking that deep tan.
Sun-protection filters: chemical and physical sun protection
Conventional sun-protection products almost always involve chemical sun-protection filters (UVA filters, UVB filters and/or broadband filters against UVA and UVB rays).
- Such sun-protection filters do not come between the skin and rays like a protective coat, but rather work through reactions on and with the skin. These processes are the reason for their frequently significant side-effects.
- Only physical sun protection is used in certified natural cosmetic products. It consists of micropigments that reflect and scatter sunlight; rays are also absorbed to a minor extent. The micropigments titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are generally used as physical sun-protection substances.
- This type of sun protection has two decisive advantages: it involves none of the side-effects that synthetic sun-protection filters can have, and has no negative environmental impact.
Synthetic sun-protection filters as a multiple stress
The question of whether the advantages of synthetic sun-protection filters actually outweigh the damage they can cause – both for people and for the environment – is a highly controversial subject.
- According to the Cosmetics Directive, only a certain number of agents are allowed, and maximum quantities have been defined for each one.
- Numerous sun-protection filters pose a significant risk, since the filtering function is based on the fact that molecules absorb a certain wavelength range. In the process, they can be modified. New compounds can be formed that have substantial allergenic potential or can lead to phototoxic reactions, i.e., become unstable in the presence of light or the skin’s own enzymes.
- A study conducted by the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Zurich also found that synthetic sun-protection filters react like estrogen in laboratory tests.
- For years, the cosmetics industry has refuted objections to synthetic sun-protection filters as unfounded. Indirectly, though, it has confirmed the criticism: many sun-protection filters are no longer used today, and some of them are not even allowed any longer. The ongoing arguments against synthetic sun-protection filters are still based on their active principle and the fact that filters that are harmful and damaging to the environment.

Why a higher factor does not help
Is a sun-protection factor of 15 inadequate? No. Unfortunately, the EU did put a stop to the numbers game in its latest recommendation; countermeasures were only taken against excesses, such as sun-protection factors of up to 100.
- Products with extremely high sun-protection factors are expensive – and have little extra effect. Everything over factor 20 makes an insignificant difference in terms of protective effect. The protective effect is 93.3% UVB protection for factor 15, 96% for factor 20, 97.4% for factor 30, and 97.5% for factor 40.
- For the increments between sun-protection factors of 15 and 50+, the overall increase in effect over the six categories (20, 25, 30, 40, 50, and 50+) is only 6.7%, which gives an average 1% improvement per increment. The difference is even slimmer for factors 40 to 50+, where the percentage range per increment is 0.x.
- Prof. Dr. med. Eckard Breitbart, Head of the Dermatological Center Buxtehude and Vice Chairman of the Association of Dermatological Prevention (ADP), says “The rise in sun-protection factors amounts to taking economic advantage of a psychological factor” (www.aerzteblatt-studieren.de). In Dr. Breitbart’s view, the use of products with a sun-protection factor of over 20 does not make any sense.
- This view is consistent with the EU European Commission’s 2006 recommendation when it declared that “The increase in protection from one number to the next is insignificant, particularly in the upper ranges. An agent with a sun-protection factor of 15 absorbs 93% of UVB rays, and a product with a sun-protection factor of 30 absorbs 97% of UVB rays. Sun-protection factors of over 50 do not significantly increase UV protection.” Still, factors that make no difference have not yet been eliminated, because in the end, they do make a difference: they mean more income for manufacturers.
- Tips on the right way to deal with the sun and sunscreen can be found at the end in the product-comparison section.

  Sun-protection filter |
| The sun protection consists of the mineral sun-protection filters titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. According to the manufacturers: nanotechnology-free in accordance with the EU Cosmetics Directive’s definition of the term. |
|
  Official UVA seal |
| Yes. |
|
Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
The basic formulation of this lotion consists of high-quality skin-nourishing oils and plant extracts such as olive, jojoba, almond, soybean, and broccoli-seed oils, an active agent from licorice root, and goji-berry extract. Further active agents include glycerine as a moisturizer and sodium lactate as a humectant. The high percentage of Aloe vera juice (5%) is especially good for the skin.
• Together with the other active ingredients, the high percentage of real plant oils adds up to a specific protection of the skin from UV stress and keeps it from drying out. Silica (mineral silicon dioxide) is the material that coats the mineral sun-protection particles.
• Since the product is certified as an organic cosmetic product according to NaTrue, only 15% of its ingredients may be chemically modified. The 15% rule means that many authentic natural products such as real plant oils (with their wide spectrum of active agents) must be used. 95% (excluding water) of these real natural ingredients must be organic, which is why the product’s organic quality is a valuable factor (see below). |
|
  Preservatives |
| This product contains no synthetic preservatives. |
|
  Organic quality |
| According to the manufacturer, 20% of the plant oils used are organic (organic olive, jojoba, broccoli-seed, and soybean oils). The product also contains 5% organic Aloe vera juice, organic goji-berry extract, and organic alcohol. |

Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
The manufacturer (from New Zealand) recommends this cream as an additional sun-protection day cream. It consists mostly of pure natural products, the only exceptions being cetearyl wheatstraw glycosides and cetearyl alcohol (naturally derived emulsifier and/or skincare product / texturising agent).
• The main oil is jojoba oil, followed by avocado oil, sclerotium gum (adjuvant), grapefruit-seed extract, a skin-protecting extract from a medicinal plant found in New Zealand, honey, and several essential oils (bitter-orange oil, patchouli, tea-tree oil, lemon myrtle oil).
• This product has a high price tag. |

to Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
The main oil is not a real plant oil, but rather a ester oil. It is followed (if we exclude the sun-protection filters) by a hydrolate, sunflower oil, three emulsifying agents, two adjuvants, a further emulsifier, and glycerine as a moisturizer.
• The lower half of the INCI list consists of active ingredients: pongamol (derived from karanja oil) as a skin-protecting active ingredient, and then baobab, Brazil nut, and passion flower oil. Those are good active ingredients, but unfortunately, an ester oil was used for the basis oil instead of the full active ingredient abundance of real plant oils.
• This is another highly priced product. |
|
 Preservatives |
| Benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid are used as preservatives. |
|
Organic quality |
| According to the manufacturer, 32% of all the ingredients are organic. Unfortunately, the product’s organic quality is mainly based on a hydrolate (second on the INCI list), and hydrolates consist primarily of water. Only sunflower oil follows. |

to Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
Based on its position in the INCI list (second), the main oil is not a real plant oil, but rather an ester oil. Organic sesame, palm-kernel, and argan oils and some organic shea butter are also included. Glycerine, used as a moisturizer, is another active ingredient.
• The three essential oils listed under the shea butter position are normally included under the term “fragrances.”
• This product is one of the most expensive sunscreens. |
|
 Preservatives |
| This product contains no synthetic preservatives. |
|
 to Organic quality |
Four of the basis ingredients are organic (organic sesame, palm-kernel, and argan oils and organic shea butter). There are also three essential oils added for fragrance.
• The package states that 100% of the plant-based ingredients are organic. While this statement may be correct in substance, such remarks are still irritating.
• The second figure shows how misleading such statements can be: a total of 10% are organic, placing the product on the lowest threshold for certification as a Cosmebio Charter organic cosmetic product. However, a positive aspect to note is that these 10% are plant oils and not water-laden ingredients such as hydrolates. |

Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
The main oils are two synthetic ester oils. The basic emulsion of water, hydrolate, ester oils and naturally derived emulsifiers contains only coconut oil and a little shea butter as real plant oils. They are followed by the additional active ingredients of glycerine as a moisturizer and skin-protecting tamanu oil.
• A price of over €27 for 100 ml makes this a very expensive product, too. |

Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
The main oil is not a real plaint oil, but an ester oil. It is followed by two additional ester oils, and glycerine as a moisturizer.
• The only real natural ingredients are karanja oil and the two essential oils for fragrance.
• Pongamol (16th on the INCI list) is an active ingredient derived from karanja oil. It would have to present in greater concentration to offer real UV protection. Pongamol is generally used as an advertising-effective supplementary active ingredient. Mineral sunscreen substances titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (4th and 5th on the INCI list) also provide sun protection.
• Aluminum stearate, a metal salt, is a common coating for titanium dioxide. Metal salts are not harmful to the skin, but they have no place in natural and organic cosmetic products.
• This product is extremely expensive. |
|
 Preservatives |
| Preserved with benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid. |
|
to Organic quality |
| With a percentage of organic ingredients of just 10.18%, this product just meets the minimum requirement for certification as a Cosmebio Charter organic cosmetic product. The lion’s share is accounted for by an ingredient containing a substantial amount of water: Hamamelis virginiana water (3rd on the INCI list). It is only followed by two essential oils as fragrances. |

Basic ingredients: C12-15 alkyl benzoate is used as a spreading agent (so that the cream spreads easily onto skin). After glycerine as a moisturizer, further active ingredients are the skin-protecting ingredients panthenol/provitamin B5 and tocopheryl acetate/vitamin E.
• The oils used are silicone oils. The product contains no ethoxylated raw materials such as PEGs. It does, however, contain EDTA, highly damaging to the environment.
• For a high-quality conventional product – at an affordable price. |

Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
Basic ingredients: C12-15 alkyl benzoate is a spreading agent (so that the cream spreads easily onto skin). It is followed by glycerine as a moisturizer, silicone oil, denatured alcohol and the synthetic humectant pentylene glycol.
• Dimethicone (silicone) and the mineral oil petrolatum are additional oils used as ingredients. Contains few ethoxylated emulsifiers.
• Unfortunately, this product also contains disodium EDTA (exceedingly environmentally harmful) and triethanolamine. Triethanolamines are raw materials that can form dangerous nitrosamine. |

Sun-protection filter |
Unfortunately, the first sun-protection filter of a total of three synthetic sun-protection filters used in this product is one suspected of developing a slightly hormonal effect.
• This ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate is also pinpointed in a study conducted by Italian scientists as being partly responsible for coral death. As we have seen for other products, there is no need for these sun-protection filters to be used. |

Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
Besides the sun-protection filters, the product only contains moisturizing agents as active ingredients (synthetic butylene glycol and glycerine). It also contains a plant extract. The main ingredient after water is a spreading agent.
• Numerous basic ingredients are environmentally harmful chemicals such as silicones, acrylate, and the very environmentally harmful disodium EDTA.
• This product also contains three ethoxylated ingredients (PEGs) and a hard surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate), which is otherwise rarely used in cosmetic products. |

Basic formulation / additional active ingredients |
This product consists mainly of water, sun-protection filters, and glycerine as a moisturizer.
• Triethanolamine, which is in 13th place on the INCI list, is followed by ingredients of which the product only contains small quantities. These include silicones and – on a very positive note – shea butter, macadamia-nut oil, and the antioxidants vitamin A palmitate and vitamin E.
• Questionable active ingredients include triethanolamine, which can form dangerous nitrosamine, and the antioxidant BHT. Disodium EDTA is a very environmentally harmful adjuvant. |

Sun & sunscreen tips
Our skin is naturally well prepared for sunshine if we give it the chance to develop its natural protective capabilities. It prevents damaging rays from penetrating into deep skin layers and takes on a healthy color. Slowly accustoming skin to the sun starting in the spring is an effective preventive measure.
The skin’s own protection mechanisms
- The body develops a “thick skin,” a horny layer, as sun protection. However, this no longer works when the skin is exposed to sun for an extended period of time after a long time without exposure. The skin needs time to build up a protective layer, which is why sunbathing sessions should be kept short at first.
- The skin screens UV light by producing more melanin, the skin’s brown pigment. But melanin production takes time: for individuals with very fair skin, it takes longer than for dark-skinned, southern people.
- The skin’s only quick defense against substantial quantities of light is the production of urocanic acid. This protective surface film helps with low levels of sun exposure and dry skin, but not during a beach vacation, where it is continually washed off in water.
- When we have been exposed to too much sun, the skin begins repairing the damage caused by sunlight. It is only when an excessive amount of sun defeats these efforts that natural sun protection no longer works – and the sun worshipper is left with a sunburn.
1/2 a bottle of sunscreen for a few hours of protection
- When determining the sun protection factors, it is important to lay it on thick: 2 mg per square centimeter. In reality, though, people generally only apply 0.5 to 1 mg per square centimeter of skin area. To achieve the protection that the sun protection factor can offer, two to four times as much sunscreen would have to be applied as is normally used.
- Lower application quantities dramatically reduce the protective effect. To avoid skin damage, any reduction should be limited to 50% or 60%.
- So, for factor 20: 60% of 200 minutes = 120 minutes, or 2 hours.
- Adding more sunscreen at intervals makes sense, but this does not extend the protection time! If the initial application offered two hours of protection, the protection duration remains two hours even if more sunscreen is added later.
Enjoying the sun the right way and in moderation
- Avoid intensive midday sun; wear a hat, light clothing, and sunglasses; head for shade when it becomes too much.
- Cover unprotected skin areas well.
- Children, especially infants and babies, must be particularly well protected.
- Babies should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
- Do not place babies and infants in the sun when naked. If they do play in the sun, cover as much of their skin as possible with clothing.
